Pivoting has become a common theme for the working class since the health crisis hit last March. Many professionals found themselves tapping into their unique skills to make career changes, and arguably every leadership team quickly pivoted business models to continue serving customers. But pivoting can be two-fold. Some pivot because they see an opportunity for change, while others may be forced to — depending on the industry they work in. Either way, product management guru Kimberley Holloway embraces the art of pivoting, and she gathered some strategies. And, if you’re looking to make career changes the right way , she will expand on this topic during AfroTech 2021. Secure a ticket to the conference today. View this post on Instagram A post shared by AfroTech (@afro.tech) Holloway’s resume spans a decade of experience. Denzel Washington directed and starred in an award-winning film inspired by Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Wiley College in 2008. Now he’s paying his respects back to the college with a generous gift from his family foundation. According to an announcement, the Denzel Washington Family Foundation has paid its fourth $100,000 installment toward its $1 million commitment to the Texas HBCU in support of students on the legendary Wiley College debate team. Wiley College was home of the film, “The Great Debaters,” that depicted Washington as a college professor who helped coach the university’s student-led team on its 10-year winning streak in the 1930s, according to a press release. The movie showed how the team went on to pioneer interracial collegiate debates during the Jim Crow era. The release also reported that Washington’s family foundation made its first $1 million pledge to the college back in 2007, and continued donating $100,000 each year for a decade. The...

The Golden Globes has a whiteness problem, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is here to change it. According to Variety, the HFPA — the governing body behind the popular awards — has announced that it’s unveiled a series of reforms designed to combat the diversity issue that is clearly plaguing their organization. In addition to addressing the diversity issue, the new Golden Globes reforms put limits on the gifts its voters can accept and the payment they receive for their work on committees. As of this writing, the HFPA has less than 90 members. Under the new proposed reforms, the HFPA will add 20 more members to their committee, with a commitment to specifically target and admit Black members. But there’s a bit of a fly in the ointment of these sweeping new proposals: they won’t be passed unless they’re met with the unanimous approval of the current, sitting committee. And there’s some concern that given the tone-deafness of the current HFPA, these proposals could...
