Hybrid and electric vehicles have been a big trend in recent years as new and innovative technologies prioritize convenience and sustainability. BYD (Build Your Dreams) is a Chinese company that has positioned itself as a dominant force, leveraging cutting-edge technology to challenge the industry’s established leaders . One of the most recognizable brands in the EV industry is Elon Musk’s Tesla . While Tesla has long been regarded as the undisputed innovator in this realm, BYD is steadily carving out its own niche. Over 100 Affordable Homes And A Black Business Hub Are Set To Arrive In North Portland, OR, Thanks To The Williams & Russell Project

An affordable housing project is making its way to Portland, OR’s Black community. The Williams & Russell project is looking to revive the Albina community, an area in North Portland that was once home to many Black families and Black businesses, until they were pushed out, KPTV-12 reports. The soon-to-be revitalized area was expected to make room for an expansion of Legacy Emanuel Hospital in the 1970s , however plans never materialized, KGW-8 mentions. “They came in and they demolished everything with the idea that this would be developed, and it just sat vacant for five decades,” Bryson Davis, president and board chair of Williams & Russell CDC, said per KGW-8. Righting the wrongs of the past, the Williams & Russell project is looking to create more than 100 affordable homes, consisting of townhomes and apartments, on a 1.7 acre lot on the corner of North Russell Street and North Williams Avenue. To be eligible for the apartments, which come in one-to-three bedroom options,...

Report Finds Black Women Need To Work Until They Are 83 To Make What White Men Make By 60

Black women working full-time make nearly $1 million less than white men during their careers, the National Women’s Law Center recently shared in a research report. While the wage gap affects all women, it arguably affects Black women the most since they face race and gender discrimination. Black women, on average, are currently paid 63 cents for every dollar that White men make. That amounts to a loss of $2,009 a month, $24,110 a year, and $964,400 over 40 years for Black women. This stark reality is why Aug. 3 is marked Black Women’s Equal Pay Day every year, which signifies the extra 214 days Black women would need to work each year to catch up to white men’s salaries. Put it this way; Black women will have to work until they are 83-years-old to reach the salaries white men make at age 60. “I don’t think it’s talked about as much as it should be,” Tiffany Williams, a business and marketing strategist, told AfroTech. “The wage gap is so prominent because there’s a lack of...

Does The Digital Nomad Life Really Work For Black Freelancers?

Earlier this year, I committed to the full-time freelancing lifestyle. While I knew that budgetary constraints would be real, I looked forward to a life on my terms. That is, the ability to earn money while traveling to all of my dream locations. Now, after a few months of doing this, here are some things I’ve learned about the digital nomad life as a freelancer: 1. Racism Still Exists In Black Countries This one caught me off-guard because I grew up in a majority-Black country and thought I would feel comfortable in any other majority-Black country. Additionally, I had heard from other Black digital nomads how much safer and more respected they felt outside of the U.S. The truth is, any economy that relies heavily on white tourism will not be entirely accommodating for Black tourists, even if their population is largely Black. Between suspicious glances in restaurants and coffee shops, to outright rudeness from service providers because they assume you’re “just a local girl,” you...

Last Year, An Apple Engineer Died While Driving His Tesla. Now, His Family Is Suing The Company

Self-driving cars are slowly becoming more of a reality, but there’s still a lot that needs to be worked out. In March 2018, Apple engineer Wei Huang died in a crash after his Tesla Model X hit a median on Highway 101 in Mountain View, California. At the time, Huang’s Tesla was in Autopilot, a driver assistance feature that Tesla made standard in all its models. The feature is supposed to make drivers safer by doing things like matching a car’s speed to existing traffic and automatically changing lanes. Now, Huang’s family has filed a lawsuit against both Tesla and the state of California, as reported by ABC 7 News . The lawsuit itself claims, “…the Tesla Model X was defective in its design, in that the passenger protection systems of the vehicle would not, could not, and did not perform in a manner as safely as an ordinary consumer would expect.” Sevonne Huang — Wei Huang’s wife — told ABC 7 News that her husband had mentioned the car veered towards the same barrier on Autopilot...

John Henry is a hustler. The entrepreneur has been in hustle mode since he founded and sold his first company in 2014, and launched Harlem Capital, a diversity-focused investment firm, where he currently serves as a partner. Now, the 26-year-old is taking his entrepreneurial prowess to Viceland with his new show, appropriately named Hustle. The eight-episode docu-series, which is executive produced by Alicia Keys, follows Henry as he challenges New York City-based entrepreneurs to push their boundaries and scale their businesses. “I set out to dispel myths and demystify the actual arc of being an entrepreneur,” he said. “The whole show is about the drive to make it. We want to capture ordinary people who had the bravery to do extraordinary things.” The series is only one part of Henry’s quest to change the face of entrepreneurship and build generational wealth in communities of color. Harlem Capital has raised $2 million of a targeted $25 million fund for underrepresented...
