Over 100 Affordable Homes And A Black Business Hub Are Set To Arrive In North Portland, OR, Thanks To The Williams & Russell Project

An affordable housing project is making its way to Portland, OR’s Black community. The Williams & Russell project is looking to revive the Albina community, an area in North Portland that was once home to many Black families and Black businesses, until they were pushed out, KPTV-12 reports. The soon-to-be revitalized area was expected to make room for an expansion of Legacy Emanuel Hospital in the 1970s , however plans never materialized, KGW-8 mentions. “They came in and they demolished everything with the idea that this would be developed, and it just sat vacant for five decades,” Bryson Davis, president and board chair of Williams & Russell CDC, said per KGW-8. Righting the wrongs of the past, the Williams & Russell project is looking to create more than 100 affordable homes, consisting of townhomes and apartments, on a 1.7 acre lot on the corner of North Russell Street and North Williams Avenue. To be eligible for the apartments, which come in one-to-three bedroom options,...

Op-Ed: I Don’t Think Studying Computer Science Leads To A Stable Career

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. Learning how to code has been centered as the most probable path to prosperity since Mark Zuckerberg rang the bell as Facebook went public in 2012. After the success of Zuckerberg and Meta , being able to learn how to code was marketed by the public and private sectors as a path to not only financial stability but also outsized prosperity. The number of computer science graduates has more than doubled over the past decade from 51,696 to 112,720 when comparing the 2013-2014 academic year to the 2022-2023 academic year, according to the National Student Clearing House, a nonprofit organization that serves as the central source for educational reporting, verification and research across the U.S. The increased focus on computer science makes sense when you learn that computer science graduates also have an average starting salary of $77,000, while the average recent graduate is $68,400, according to...

McDonald's Faces Boycott Over DEI Rollbacks As Consumer-Led Activism Gains Steam

McDonald’s is the latest major brand in the crosshairs of a growing consumer-led movement protesting companies accused of scaling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. A nationwide boycott of the fast-food giant , launched Tuesday by grassroots group The People’s Union USA, adds to a string of “economic blackouts” the organization has orchestrated since February, USA Today reported. Why Are People Boycotting McDonald’s? The boycott stems from a perception of corporate DEI as performative. The People’s Union USA Founder, John Schwarz, said the protest is about holding corporations accountable as they quietly reduce their DEI commitments under pressure from political and economic factors. Earlier this year, McDonald’s drew public backlash for removing benchmarks related to executive-level and supplier diversity, AFROTECH™ previously reported. While the company insists its programs remain intact, the messaging has shifted. U.S. Chief People Officer Jordann Nunn told USA...

IRS Tax Refunds Worth $3,000 On Average Are Coming This June — Here’s Who’s Eligible

A financial boost could be on the way for many Americans this summer, as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) prepares to distribute tax refunds in June and July. For eligible taxpayers, IRS tax refunds close to $3,000 may be deposited into bank accounts or mailed out within the month, as Mint reports. Who’s Eligible? According to the outlet, taxpayers who submitted their 2024 tax return before the end of May 2025, or filed for an extension, may be eligible to receive the refund. Eligibility is also determined by the accuracy and completeness of your return. If your paperwork was filed electronically and you opted for direct deposit, you’re more likely to receive your refund faster than someone who mailed in a return or is receiving a paper check. The IRS has emphasized that e-filers with no significant errors or missing information, whose returns are not under review or audit, will be prioritized. That means if you submitted your return accurately and early, you could see your refund...

Op-Ed: The 2025 Met Gala Celebrated Black Art, But Black People Still Lack Structural Power

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. The theme of the 2025 Met Gala was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, particularly focused on Black dandyism. Guest Curator Monica L. Miller’s book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” served as the primary inspiration for the exhibit. Black dandyism began in 18th century Britain, but its cultural movement took root in the early 20th century, in which Black people embodied the European sensibility through clothing as a form of self-expression. Emerging during a time when African Americans had little to no agency after the Emancipation Proclamation (1863), they used dandyism to address the erosion of their civil rights. The theme highly parallels the current fight to retain ownership and freedom during a divisive time in politics. The 2025 Met Gala had Black male co-chairs for the first time in history, with celebrities A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton,...

Why Some Social Security Benefits Recipients Will Get Double Payments In May

About 7.4 million Americans who depend on social security benefits through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program will see two payments hit their accounts in May. It’s not extra money, but it is a significant shift to understand. The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) calendar is the reason for the double deposit, with June’s payment arriving early because the first of the month falls on a Sunday. According to USA Today, the first payment is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, and the second will follow on Friday, May 30. Even though two payments will land in the same month, beneficiaries need to know that the second check is an advance for June. Knowing how and why this happens can help millions who rely on social security benefits plan ahead and avoid gaps in their income. Why Two SSI Payments Are Coming In May Every so often, the SSA’s calendar shifts when regular payment dates fall on weekends or holidays. Instead of delaying deposits, the agency sends payments early....

Op-Ed: I Believe Trump's Tariffs Could Hinder The AI Boom

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. President Donald Trump has gone all in on his tariff crusade, announcing last week a 10% tariff on almost every country with even higher tariffs on specific countries. From beauty and food to car automation , every industry is currently reeling with the stock market dovetailing, and the potential negative aftereffects will be felt for decades to come. However, the now billion-dollar AI industry is at risk of being decimated thanks to Trump’s tariffs. Pro-crypto and pro-AI fanatics have curried a lot of favor with the president, so much so that many of them have been appointed as high government officials to advance America’s standing in the global AI race. Even though Trump has reversed his initial thoughts towards technology, his insistence on tariffs may hurt the AI industry after all. According to Time, AI companies, along with several other industries, lost billions of dollars when the tariffs...

Op-Ed: Could Trump's Tariffs Mean The End Of Fast Fashion Companies Like Shein And Temu?

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. While President Donald Trump has delayed the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for another month, tariffs have already been imposed on China. Tariffs on China include a 10% tax, along with closing a loophole that helped boost China-owned brands like Temu and Shein. When a foreign shipment arrives, it goes through customs and gets inspected, and the importer has to pay an import tax depending on the size of the shipment. For almost a century, there’s been a loophole where small packages under a certain value would be exempt from that tax, called “de minimis.” Ten years ago, Congress expanded the exemption to include packages worth under $800. Stores like Temu, Shein, and Chinese drop shippers that sell on Amazon and the TikTok Shop have used the loophole to their advantage. The majority of retailers ship products in bulk to U.S. warehouses as they go through the traditional customs process. Shein and...
