Something really good is brewing in Baltimore! The two are joining forces to bring more diversity to the beer industry through the city’s Diversity Apprenticeship Program. Created through the Guinness Gives Back Baltimore Fund, this partnership between the city of Baltimore and Guinness Open Gate Brewery will help to train the new crop of aspiring beer brewers over the course of the next five years with an important goal in mind — to help create career pathways into hospitality for marginalized groups. Although Guinness previously announced the initial commitment back in June in the wake...

How Amazon Is Championing Black Employees Through Innovations Such As Its First Robot With A Sense Of Touch

As Amazon unveils new technology, it is also proving to be a win for its employees. Vulcan At Amazon’s 2025 Delivering the Future event held May 6–7 in Dortmund, Germany, the company introduced the Vulcan, Amazon’s first robot with a sense of touch. Made possible by an artificial intelligence-powered sensor, it is the first of its kind and is able to use video rather than still images to monitor and control its motions, as noted by Aaron Parness, Amazon’s director of applied science in robotics and artificial intelligence. “We’re at the golden age for robotics. AI is allowing us to develop systems that can interact with the physical world and not just the ones on our screens,” Parness said during the Main Event held at Amazon’s Last Mile Innovation Center. Vulcan will be beneficial to its employees who are fulfilling orders for customers at the company’s facilities thanks to the robot’s ability to pick and stow away 75% of the items stored in the warehouses. “One of the really...

Lewis Hamilton Was The First Black Formula 1 Driver — A Milestone That Fueled A Report Catalyzing DEI Efforts In Motorsports

Lewis Hamilton has made it his mission to diversify his sport. Hamilton, raised in North London, England, began racing at 8 years old and experienced a lack of representation in the sport firsthand. However, winning created an opportunity for him to feel accepted, he admits in conversation with GQ. “Being the only Black kid on the circuit, struggling at school, really always my big drive was acceptance — ‘If I win the race, I will receive that acceptance in this world,'” he expressed.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by AFROTECH (@afro.tech) Hamilton began to allocate a lot of his time towards go-karting at a young age with the support of his father, Anthony, who was his mentor and manager, Formula 1 reports. Anthony simultaneously had three jobs at a time to support his son’s driving career. The sacrifice would pay off even within Hamilton’s childhood years. “We won the first six races…Then we just kept going. We kept winning. We kept winning championships,” Hamilton...

Op-Ed: As A Black Founder, Here's How I Believe Kamala Harris’ Opportunity Economy Creates Opportunities For Other Black Men In Tech

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. Often, in the political process, whether at the local, state, or federal level, Black men feel as though they are not considered when it comes to policy. Vice President Kamala Harris changed that when she released her nine-page economic agenda proposal called the Opportunity Agenda for Black Men. This document outlined how she specifically wanted to improve Black men’s lives holistically. Harris plans to take five steps to increase the prosperity of Black men. (1) Provide 1 million forgivable loans of $20,000 for Black men to create businesses; (2) Provide education, mentorship, and apprenticeship programs aimed at getting Black men into higher demand industries, as well as create pathways to bring more Black men into the world of teaching; (3) Support regulations for cryptocurrency, which Black men are materially represented in as holders of these assets; (4) Launch a National Health Equity...

Aspiring Attorneys, Learn What You Need To Know About Becoming a Paralegal

There are more than 1.3 million lawyers in the United States, one-fourth of them in two states: New York (188K) and California (170K). In 2013, lawyers of color were just 11%. A decade later, that total has almost doubled to 21%. However, the biggest increase within the minority lawyer community is with Asian American lawyers, not Black ones. In 2013, Black lawyers totaled 4.8%. Ten years later, the total was 5%. But for aspiring lawyers (and attorneys ) who are interested in joining that 5% (and helping to increase the number), becoming a paralegal is one step in that direction. Deciding Between A Career As A Lawyer, Attorney Or Professional Paralegal While interested legal students will be able to make the final decision about which path they want to go into, they should have a general idea about whether they want to be an attorney, a lawyer or a paralegal. There is a common misunderstanding that you have to do all three in order to work within the legal industry. That is...

Brittney Mikell Left The Pharmaceutical Field With Aspirations To Become The First Black Woman To Own A Brewery In Minnesota

Former pharmacist Brittney Mikell will be making history in her next chapter. WCCO-TV reports Mikell exited her role in pharmacy after experiencing burnout. She then decided to purse her passion in brewing and landed a role as an assistant brewer at La Dona Cerveceria in Minneapolis, MN. “I didn’t feel like I was making the impact that I really wanted to in healthcare,” Mikell explained to  Eater Twin Cities. “I woke up one day and realized that this could be a really cool place where I could make an impact. You only really live once, so I decided, let’s just pivot — why not?” Mikell maintained bigger aspirations while working at La Dona Cerveceria, referring to herself as “a huge dreamer,” per WCCO-TV. She plans to become the first Black woman to own a brewery in Minnesota. This is significant as just 1% of breweries in the U.S. are Black-owned, Essence reports. Additionally, of the 200 breweries in the state, few are owned by women or people of color, WCCO-TV mentions. “The...

By Freada Kapor Klein, Founding Partner of Kapor Capital and Allison Scott, CEO of Kapor Foundation The Supreme Court’s decision banning affirmative action in higher education on June 29, 2023, is part of a larger series of organized attacks on momentum and progress towards racial equity, particularly in the tech industry–including the lawsuit and recent injunction against Fearless Fund, for alleging racial discrimination and temporarily halting the VC firm from awarding its grants exclusively to Black female entrepreneurs; lawsuits against Perkins Coie and Morrison Foerster for their diversity law fellowship programs; the overturning of the Small Business Association’s focus on minority businesses; 13 State Attorneys General threatening Fortune 100 companies regarding their DEI programs and initiatives; legislation in Texas and Florida banning DEI offices in higher education and restricting related courses; backlash against organizational diversity statements; and tech diversity...

“We are not spectators:” Inclusion Leaders at dentsu International On How They’re Creating More Equitable Environments For Black Employees

In today’s quickly changing job market, people are looking for companies that check all of their boxes. They want to show up and be inspired by their work, be inspired by company leadership and make an impact with the projects they work on. Many job seekers are also seriously considering how a company handles diversity in its workforce for the first time. Unfortunately, finding a company that meets those criteria in today’s job market can be challenging. In the past few years, employers have loudly proclaimed that diversity was a core part of their values and that the voices and contributions of Black talent were central to how they saw their company futures. But the reality of how Black employees are compensated, trained and valued hasn’t matched up to those claims. Fortunately, integrated advertising agencies within dentsu International’s network are showing up in a real way for Black employees. Through diversity initiatives and other social impact efforts, dentsu hopes to...

Doing the Most Good: Meet the Medical Tech Company That’s Revolutionizing Cancer Research

Cancer affects nearly two million new people in the United States each year. And while many medical research companies are racing to find a long-term solution, there are still critical pieces of the cancer care enigma that need to be resolved. Flatiron Health partners with more than 280 community cancer clinics across the United States, seven major academic cancer centers and 20+ top developers of oncology therapeutics, as well as the National Cancer Institute, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and others. The healthcare technology and services company got its start in 2012 and has seen incredible growth as it pursues its mission “to improve lives by learning from the experience of every cancer patient.” While this sentiment is widely shared, research doesn’t actually capture the experiences of every patient. And while it’s undeniable that innovating cancer care and collecting the relevant patient data to do so is a priority, Flatiron...
