Apple Launches 'Apple Invites' App With Striking Similarities To Android's 'Partiful' Ahead Of Annual Shareholders Meeting

Apple has a new app on the market. On Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, the tech company introduced Apple Invites, which allows Apple device owners to create custom invitations to round up friends and family for any occasion, the tech giant shared in a news release. The app lets users invite friends from their contact list to an event, share the invite with a link, add photos to shared albums, and interact with an Apple Music playlist. “With Apple Invites, an event comes to life from the moment the invitation is created, and users can share lasting memories even after they get together,” Brent Chiu-Watson, Apple’s senior director of worldwide product marketing for apps and iCloud , said. “Apple Invites brings together capabilities our users already know and love across iPhone, iCloud, and Apple Music, making it easy to plan special events.” While an iCloud+ subscription, which starts at 99 cents, is required to create invites, anyone — including Android users — can RSVP and view information...

Twitter App Security Glitch Could Spell Trouble for Android Users

Twitter recently announced a potential security threat for Android users. An app vulnerability may give hackers backdoor access to otherwise secure account information , such as direct messages, protected tweets, or location details. In addition, such access could allow hackers to take over a user’s account, sending messages on the user’s behalf. Twitter affirmed that there was no proof of hacking, but sought to reassure Android users in a statement posted on its blog, which read, in part: “We have taken steps to fix this issue and are directly notifying people who could have been exposed to this vulnerability either through the Twitter app or by email with specific instructions to keep them safe .” To avoid any possible security issues, Twitter recommends that Android users download the latest version of the app, or use Twitter.com until they are able to do so.  iPhone users were not affected by the security glitch.

India Begins Investigating Google For Alleged Android Abuse

Google may be under hot water after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) started examining Google’s Android practices because of complaints from unspecified people last year . Now, the CCI has ordered a complete investigation of Google. Two unnamed sources told Reuters that the preliminary found Google abused the “dominant position of its Android operating system to block rivals.” When it comes to smartphones, it really comes down to whether you use Android or iOS. A January 2018 Newzoo article found that worldwide, Android dominates the market — largely due to China and India. So, it’s no small thing for the CCI to begin looking into Google’s business practices. If Google is found guilty, TechCrunch reported that it could be fined up to 10 percent of its local revenue of 300 percent of its net profit. “Android has enabled millions of Indians to connect to the internet by making mobile devices more affordable,” a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch. “We look forward to working...

Customers In Emerging Markets Will Soon Be Able To Pay For Android Apps With Cash

Google wants to close the gap for Android customers in emerging markets who may not be able to purchase apps with credit cards. The company announced during it’s Google I/O conference this week that it is letting customers complete app purchases with cash in some of their participating stores. The company has been expanding its payment offerings to include carrier billing partnerships and eWallets. Google’s new payment method for apps will come in the form of “pending transactions.” Users choose the alternative payment method at checkout when buying an app or making an in-app purchase. Then they are sent a code. Customers can then take the code to any local participating store. “This is a new class of delayed form of payment – like cash, bank transfer and direct debit,” Google Director of Engineering Aurash Mahbod, said to a crowd during the Google I/O conference. Customers won’t receive cash back for refunds. Instead, they will receive a credit on their accounts if they want their...

Android Users are Struggling to Use Nike's Smart-Shoe

Last month, Nike debuted its app-controlled Adapt BB sneaker. Now Android phone users seem to be having difficulties. Some reviews reported the app would not connect to the right or left shoe, making it impossible for the self-lacing feature to work. After some patience and a few tries with the hard-reset, other users were able to connect the sneakers with their phones again. According to the Verge , some of the connectivity problems are because the sneakers are being shipped with an older version of the software that is not compatible with users’ phones. Smart-wear is becoming more common. Last week, the NBA debuted its smart jersey that is controlled through an app. The jersey allows users to change the name and number. Nike’s Bluetooth-enabled Adapt BB app is apparently more built out for iOS. Android users can expect more updates with the app at a later date.

Twitter Says That Protected Tweets For Android Users Were Exposed For Years

Twitter users with Androids were in for an unpleasant surprise when the platform notified them that a bug in its system made their “protected tweets” accessible for years. On January 17, Twitter said in a blog post that Android users’ tweets were exposed if “certain account changes were made.” The company said that Android users who changed their email address associated with their accounts between November 3, 2014, and January 14, 2019 were vulnerable to the bug. Web users and iOS users were not impacted by the bug. Twitter apologized in the blog post and encouraged users to review their privacy settings to ensure the settings reflect their preferences. Twitter did not say how many users had been affected. “We are providing this broader notice through the Twitter Help Center since we can’t confirm every account that may have been impacted,” the company said. This is the latest bug in a string of social media platform mishaps and now the Irish Data Protection Commission is...

Yale's Nathaneo Johnson And Sean Hargrow Secure $3.1M To Rival LinkedIn, Reportedly The Most VC Raised For Current Ivy League Students

Yale University students Nathaneo Johnson And Sean Hargrow have launched what they call “the first AI social network.” Business Insider reports that the duo was inspired to found Series because vanity metrics, such as likes and follower counts, were becoming a barrier to connection on platforms such as LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram. “I see it within our generation, the FOMO, the ‘I’m not good enough, I won’t reach out to that person, he’s better than me,'” Hargrow told Business Insider. “Forget your likes, forget your followers, let’s focus on who you are and what you can bring to the table and what you need, and what somebody else can bring to your table if it makes sense.” In 2024, Series was founded with a focus on student entrepreneurs . The platform allows people to chat with an “AI Friend,” whether they’re using an iPhone or Android, to gauge what kind of connections they’re looking for. From there, the AI agent matches them with another Series user who fits...

Op-Ed: AI Can Build Your App So You Can Stop Asking Others

Editorial Note: Opinions and thoughts are the author’s own and not those of AFROTECH™. Since Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook , knowing how to code has been one of the most in-demand skills of the century. Millennials were first exposed to the world of programming via Myspace, where users could use HTML & CSS to customize their profiles to their liking. During the focus on code, there have been increasingly more companies focused on making it so anyone who wants to create an app or a website can do it without having to have studied computer science. Since the early days of the dot-com era, companies have been developing tools to make website creation accessible to those without a background in computer science. WordPress is one of the first to do this at scale—and one of the most recognizable. WordPress was founded in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg, focusing on making blogging more accessible for people who did not know how to write HTML/CSS & Javascript. As of 2024, 44% of all websites are...

The Zeros Are Aplenty For Apple's Net Worth

People are sensitive about their phones. Want proof? Tell an Apple smartphone user to buy an Android phone, and you’ll be met with the same facial expression as hearing someone say they don’t know how to play Spades .  It’s not that 3.3 billion Android users don’t exist. It’s just that Apple has made such a name for itself that the average Apple user is chasing that brand even more than they’re chasing the actual phone. Competitors get dismissed quickly. Even though the average salary for an iPhone worker is $10 an hour , that same phone (ex. iPhone 15 Pro) they made has a price tag of $558. Are Apple Products On The Decline? Last year, according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission , Apple’s total net sales were $383.3 billion and its net income was $97 billion, a small decrease of 2.79% from $394.3 billion in 2022 . While that may be alarming to founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, inflation and unemployment ( 6.3 million in 2023, up from 5.9 million at the end of 2022...
