Jay-Z To Receive Nearly $7M In Unpaid Royalties From Parlux Fragrances After A Six-Year Legal Battle

The six-year legal battle between Jay-Z and Parlux Fragrances has officially come to an end.

Background Story On The Lawsuit

As previously reported by AfroTech, the lawsuit followed the failed 2013 partnership “Gold Jay-Z.” The fragrance company claimed that the scent’s sales went downhill due to the rap legend failing to promote the brand and breaching his contract.

Jay-Z later countersued because he stated that “he had fulfilled his obligations despite numerous missteps from Parlux.”

In November 2021, the Manhattan jury cleared Jay-Z of $67 million in damages regarding the deal. Then, three months later, he won $4.5 million in unpaid royalties from Parlux.

“The record is clear: Parlux sold licensed products after July 31, 2015, but failed to pay royalties on those sales,” wrote Justice John Higgitt of the New York Appellate Division, at the time. The court also ruled that it would include interest for the product sales.

Final Verdict

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Andrew Borrok recently ruled that Parlux has to pay Jay-Z $6.78 million in unpaid royalties, along with interest, according to the New York Post.

“We’ve been awarded and will be receiving the money as we should,” Jay-Z’s lawyer Alex Spiro shared, per the outlet.

After the Manhattan judge’s ruling, Parlux filed an appeal.

When leaving the court, Jay-Z was asked by a reporter, “Do you have 98 problems now?”

“Aye, I like that,” he responded.
