On May 7, 2020 history was made, according to The Times and Democrat.
Scott D. Stephens II, the son of Mr. Scott Stephens Sr. and Mrs. Jamie Goff Stephens, is the first student to ever graduate from South Carolina State University (SCSU) with a degree in industrial engineering.
“A special thank you goes out to my instructor of the Project Lead the Way at Calhoun County High School, Mr. Alvin Fersner,” he told The Times and Democrat. “As my instructor, he taught me all about engineering, ranging from fundamentals of CAD to AET 101-Building Systems 1. As an Early College student at Calhoun County High School, I was able to transfer several credit hours which benefited me greatly. I would also like to thank my instructor, Dr. Hong at South Carolina State University, who worked tirelessly to make sure l finished strong.”
Perhaps most interestingly is the fact that Stephens II is a part of the same graduating class as none other than Charlamagne Tha God, AfroTech previously reported.
Born Lenard McKelvey, The Breakfast Club co-host got an honorary doctorate from SCSU, and he was just as proud of his accomplishment as Stephens II was of his.
“Couldn’t ask for a greater Mother’s Day Weekend,” he said. “Giving the commencement speech at my mother’s alma mater on Mothers Day Weekend while she’s alive to see it was surreal. Thank You God, for engineering my life, and Thank You @scstate1896 for the opportunity. It was an honor and a privilege!!!!”
As for the graduate, Scott D. Stephens II plans to go on to Boeing, where he already got an offer from the company to work for them.
He had a previous relationship with Boeing because he interned there while he was in Calhoun County High School in South Carolina.
