This Couple Created A First-Of-Its-Kind App To Solve Their Own Problem, Then Ended Up Helping Other Small Businesses Across 900 Cities

If you are tired of being down on your luck when it comes to managing your ever-evolving services for others, this app is just for you.

ShearShare is a first-of-its-kind mobile app providing licensed beauty and barbering professionals rent flexible, affordable spaces to work with no-term leases or commission fees.

After creating the platform to help with their own excess capacity in their barbershop and salon, Dr. Tye and his wife, Courtney Caldwell knew that this was something that other business owners could use to scale and thrive.

“Like all great businesses, ShearShare was first created because we were trying to solve our own problem,” Dr. Tye told AfroTech. “Today, we’re fueling small business recovery across 900 cities, but it didn’t start out that way.”

After discovering the shift in the industry as a licensed barber and stylist who has been operating for close to three decades, Dr. Tye realized the opportunity for economic mobility for others in the space.

Better Together

Caldwell explains the couple’s superpower, not just as business owners, but in their love for helping others, too.

“Our collective superpower is not just our subject-matter expertise,” she shared. “Our real magic lies in the fact that we work together in all areas of life to make a difference in our community.”

ShearShare is creating opportunities where there has never been an opportunity, which is probably why they’ve attracted investors like those that make up the Fearless Fund. At the end of Spring 2022, the company raised $2.3 million, bringing their overall total amount raised to $5.5 million.

Level Up Ventures, New York Ventures, Portfolia, and more participated, but Fearless Fund led the round.

“We are beyond excited to invest in ShearShare as they create a new marketplace in the salon and barbershop business,” said Arian Simone, Co-Founder and General Partner of Fearless Fund. “Creating access to new locations in the beauty business creates jobs and liquidity for the professionals they serve, and a great haircut is a perfect place to start!”

A Commitment To Helping Others

The platform has also been named as one of Fast Company’s 18 apps changing the world for the better.

“ShearShare is our legacy,” said Dr. Tye. “The next five years will see us as the trusted, go-to resource for hairstylists, barbers, nail techs, estheticians, makeup artists, massage therapists, braiders, microblading artists, and salon and barbershop owners whenever they have a question about proven methods to manage, protect, and grow their businesses.”
